Nova Scotia Nature Trust - An Enduring Natural Legacy

Canadian wildlife photographer and competition judge Gail Bisson is supporting the Nova Scotia Nature Trust with her category ‘Wet’ which is open throughout the course of January 2021. Here is a little more about Nova Scotia Nature Trust and their ‘Twice the Wild’ campaign.

Nature has been the antidote to the stress, anxiety and isolation of COVID-19 and other challenges. People are rediscovering that nature brings us joy. That being outdoors makes our kids happy and brings families together. That nature can keep us healthy—mentally and physically. That it restores us.

We need nature now more than ever. And right now through our Twice the Wild campaign, your donation will unlock matching funds to quadruple your impact!

Our wild spaces and treasured species are threatened. Across most of Canada, large areas of wilderness are Crown Lands and fairly easy to protect, but in Nova Scotia this is not the case. Over 70% of the province—and 85% of the coastline--is privately owned. These private lands include many of our most important natural areas, from our last remaining old forests to critical habitat for endangered species.

The Nova Scotia Nature Trust’s mission is to protect the province’s ecologically significant lands. Over 25 years they have protected 15,000 acres using a strategic, science-driven approach to identify and protect the most threatened, unique and significant natural areas. But nature needs all of us to move faster, before it’s too late. So they have set an ambitious goal: to double their protected spaces to 30,000 acres within the next 3 years.

Fortunately, major partners are also stepping up to support these efforts. The Government of Canada, recognizing the urgency for conservation action, has committed to protect 30% of Canada’s land for nature by 2030. They’ve backed this promise with the single largest investment in nature conservation in Canadian history. Other major funders are also ready to act, and have been inspired to invest in the Nature Trust’s bold plan.

Thanks to these amazing funding partners, every dollar donated to this campaign to protect Twice the Wild - including the funds raised from WildArt’s January competition - will unlock four more. That means a gift of $100 (approximately £57) will generate another $400, for a total of $500 in land conservation.

What will twice the wild look like? More land added to the Nature Trust’s signature projects, and new protected areas across Nova Scotia. Critical habitat protected for wildlife at risk, from turtles and terns to marten and moose. Coastal island sanctuaries for our beloved birds. Towering old forests, lakes and rivers kept pristine — forever.

So imagine — twice the nature. Twice the biodiversity. Twice the habitat. Twice the wildlife photography. Twice the bird watching. Twice the adventures.
